The Pandemic Flu Kit is comprised SR 100, high efficiency SR 510 P100, for very small particles such as bacteria & viruses and Prefilter for coarse particles. This combination of half mask, particulate filter and prefilter is NIOSH approved (Approval Number TC-84A-2664). NIOSH does not regulate usage of respirators. NIOSH approves a respirator system of components (e.g. mask, filters, etc.) for protection against specific exposures. For example, the SR 100 and it associated components is approved use against particulate exposures. The SR 510 filter is NIOSH tested as a P100 filter (99.97% efficient to the NIOSH test standard). NIOSH did not certify the “Pandemic Flu Kit”; it certified the SR 100 and associated components for protection against particulate exposures. Bacterias, viruses, particles and aerosols are particulates. That is why the CDC and NIOSH make recommendations that at least an N95 respirator or greater protection is needed for protection against exposures like avian, swine and other type of influenzas.
